In response to the killing of Cecil the lion, the Ministry of Environment imposed a 5 day temporary suspension of all hunting across Zimbabwe from 2 – 7th August 2015. During this time consultation was undertaken with the relevant stakeholders of the tourism industry. The statement announcing its findings and the lifting of the hunting ban was issued by the Ministry on 7th August.
This incident has highlighted the needed reforms agreed by all stakeholders at the Hunting workshop held eight (8) days prior to the killing of Cecil the lion. The Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association (ZPHGA) were key attendees of this workshop. The ZPHGA press release on the lifting of the hunting ban can be read in full here.
