As winter gives way to summer here in Zimbabwe our thoughts turn towards the northwest of the country and the spectacular fishing that we have there. We often feel that the best way to expierience our country is a lovely hunting trip with Rosslyn followed by a trip to the mighty Zambezi to enjoy some addictive tiger fishing!
Days on Rosslyn run on old rhythms, up before the birds, out while the light is still soft and grey, tracking on foot with people who read the ground better than most of us read the newspaper. And, of course, enjoying the taste of game meat back at Camp. But what about those that don’t hunt (but fish!)? We offer a selection of non-hunting activities right here – horse riding on the most beautiful natured horses, wildlife viewing at waterholes, vulture viewing, game walks and drives.
When the hunting’s done, the second half of the trip starts. A charter flight takes you directly to the start of the fishing trip on the lower Zambezi river. Motor down towards and past the Mana Pools National Park. The boat is your groups alone, nobody else’s rods are on it, wherever you camp is yours alone. The boat is beautifully equipped with food, drink, comfortable beds and all fishing tackle. Moving daily down the river, you camp every night in a new spot.
The tiger fishing is exciting and the bream fishing at the heat of the day provides the bait and the occasional dinner or snacks, because there’s something correctly old-fashioned about catching your own supper. The plethora of honking hippos, the soul-stirring sunsets and the moving water all lend itself to the wild and remote area you find yourself in.
Logistically, this trip suits four to eight people comfortably, small enough to stay intimate, large enough to split the costs and fill the evenings with an argument about whose fish was bigger. Twelve nights is the sweet spot for combining both halves properly; enough room for the hunt to breathe, and enough days on the water to justify the effort of getting there.
From the river you can connect to fly straight home or, you can add on a few days in Victoria Falls to bridge that gap between your wonderful wild experiences and the realities of home!
